WhatsApp Introduces New Tagging Feature in Status Updates

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp continues to enhance its user experience with new features for status updates. In its latest rollout, WhatsApp has introduced several new functions designed to improve engagement and interaction between users, particularly with the introduction of tagging and private mentions.

According to the company, WhatsApp Status is an essential way for users to stay connected with friends and family. The newly introduced features aim to make these connections even more seamless. One of the key additions is the ability for users to "privately mention" or tag contacts in their status updates. This feature ensures that important updates don’t go unnoticed, as those mentioned will receive a private notification. Unlike traditional mentions, the tag will not appear publicly in the status itself, maintaining privacy.

Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced a status "like" feature. This works similarly to likes on other social platforms—allowing users to show appreciation for their contacts’ status updates with a single tap. Notably, status likes remain private, with no public counter, ensuring that only the person who posted the status can see who liked it.

These new features are being rolled out gradually and will soon be available to users worldwide. "We’ll be bringing more features to Status and the Updates tab over the next few months to make it easier to stay closest to those who matter most," WhatsApp noted in its blog post. Users are encouraged to keep an eye out for these updates in the coming days.
