Western Railway is set to commence the work on the 6th railway line between Goregaon and Kandivali. This new line, spanning approximately 4.5 km, is slated to start from the night of August 27/28, 2024, and is expected to be completed by October 5/6, 2024.
To minimize disruption, the work will be conducted in 10-hour blocks during the night on weekends. However, passengers should be aware that a few long-distance trains may experience delays of 15 to 20 minutes, while suburban services could face significant impacts, including the cancellation of 100 to 140 services and the short-termination of around 40 services on weekends. Notably, no work will occur from September 11 to 17, 2024, due to the Ganpati Festival.
Shri Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, highlighted that the new line will be constructed on the west side of Malad Station due to space constraints on the east side. The existing five lines will be shifted westward through cut and connection. This upgrade aims to enhance the line capacity of the Mumbai Suburban section, ease congestion on busy tracks, and improve train punctuality.
The 6th line will initially extend between Goregaon and Kandivali and will subsequently be extended to the Kandivali-Borivali section. The overall project will lead to several benefits, including:
Increased line capacity for the Mumbai Suburban section.
Reduced congestion on both suburban and mainline tracks.
Improved punctuality of trains.
Dedicated lines for trains originating or terminating at Bandra Terminus.
Better segregation of mainline and suburban trains.
Additional paths for more train services.
Enhanced convenience for commuters on the Andheri–Borivali–Virar corridor.
This expansion is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of train operations and commuter experience on this crucial section of the Western Railway network.
