Three coaches of the Secunderabad-Shalimar Superfast Express derailed early this morning near Nalpur Station in West Bengal. The incident occurred at 5:31 am while the train was traveling from Secunderabad to Shalimar. According to railway officials, two passenger coaches and one parcel van went off the tracks as the train switched from the middle track to the down track. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported. Railway authorities were quick to respond, sending emergency and medical relief trains from Santragachi and Kharagpur to the scene. In addition, 10 buses have been arranged to transport stranded passengers to their destinations.
Southern Railway has set up helpline numbers for affected passengers: 63764 (Kharagpur Railway) and 032229-3764 (P&T). While the cause of the derailment is still under investigation, initial reports suggest it occurred while the train was changing tracks at a junction. A full inquiry will be conducted to determine the exact reasons behind the derailment. The incident has caused delays and cancellations along the busy Howrah-Kolkata route, and authorities are working to clear the tracks and restore normal services as quickly as possible.
This derailment has raised renewed concerns about the safety of India’s railway system. Several train accidents have occurred in recent months, prompting calls for better safety measures, improved infrastructure, and more regular track and train maintenance. While quick action was taken to manage the situation and prevent serious harm, passengers and the public continue to voice concerns about the need for stronger safety protocols. As investigations continue, railway authorities have reassured the public that steps will be taken to prevent such accidents in the future.
