New Delhi: The Supreme Court has confirmed that people with a driving licence for a light motor vehicle (LMV) can drive transport vehicles weighing up to 7,500 kg. This decision, made by a five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, supports an earlier ruling from 2017.
The court stated that LMV licence holders do not need an extra licence to drive transport vehicles within this weight limit. While road safety remains a serious issue, the insurance companies that challenged this rule could not prove that LMV drivers caused more accidents when driving transport vehicles.
“Road safety is important, but extra restrictions must have solid proof,” said the bench.
This decision is expected to settle many disputes between drivers and insurance companies about who is responsible for accident claims when transport vehicles are driven by those with an LMV licence. The ruling gives clearer guidelines for drivers and insurers, making it easier to understand the law on driving licences.
