"Supreme Court Grills West Bengal Govt Over Controversial Job Appointments Amid Legal Battle"

Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, questioned West Bengal government's rationale behind appointing candidates amid a contested selection process. Tough queries were posed over the creation of additional posts and hiring waitlisted applicants while the process was under legal scrutiny. Concerns were raised regarding the destruction of vital documents and breach of security protocols. Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the risk of public trust erosion due to systemic irregularities in job appointments. The court is set to reconvene on July 16 to decide the fate of the appointments. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had paused a high court order for a CBI investigation into the recruitment scam, refusing to stay the cancellation of over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff appointments. The state government argues against what it calls the "arbitrary" cancellation of appointments, stressing its impact on the education system.
