Stakeholder Consultation Held on Protection from Online Fake Reviews


The Department of Consumer Affairs organized a stakeholder consultation, chaired by Mrs. Nidhi Khare, Secretary, to address the surge in consumer grievances related to e-commerce, which rose from 95,270 in 2018 to 4,44,034 in 2023. The meeting discussed mandating the implementation of Indian Standard (IS) 19000:2022, focusing on principles and requirements for online consumer reviews. Proposed Quality Control Order (QCO) aims to ensure genuine reviews are published while prohibiting biased reviews and alteration of messages. Stakeholders, including major online platforms and consumer associations, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of protecting consumer interests in online shopping. The draft QCO will be open for public consultation.
