Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has criticized the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu priest and former ISKCON leader, in Bangladesh. The priest was arrested in Dhaka on Monday and denied bail on Tuesday. He faces charges of sedition after participating in peaceful protests supporting minority rights.
In a video message, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh is “deeply painful.” He defended the priest, saying, “Chinmoy Krishna Das is standing with helpless people. He has not used violence. Peaceful protest is the right of every citizen.”
He appealed to Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s caretaker government, to release the priest.
The arrest comes after protests by Bangladesh’s Hindu community, who are demanding better protection for minorities. The protests follow reports of violence, including the destruction of temples and attacks on Hindu homes and businesses.
India has condemned the arrest and called on Bangladesh to ensure the safety of minority communities. “It is unfortunate that while those committing violence remain free, a religious leader is punished for peaceful protests,” India’s Foreign Ministry said.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar urged the government of Bangladesh to respect human rights and protect minorities. “Religious leaders have a duty to support the affected. Arresting someone who speaks for justice is not acceptable,” he said.
The arrest has raised concerns about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh and the need for stronger protections.
