Six Years of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY: Transforming Healthcare in India

23 September 2024

Launched on September 23, 2018, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has revolutionized healthcare in India. Designed to provide free health coverage to over 12 crore families, or about 55 crore individuals, it has become the largest healthcare scheme in the world.

Under PM-JAY, each family is covered for hospitalisation expenses up to ₹5 lakh annually. The scheme helps families afford expensive treatments for serious illnesses, covering both secondary and tertiary care services. By doing so, it has significantly reduced the financial burden of medical costs, especially for India’s most vulnerable people.

Over the last six years, PM-JAY has been a lifeline for millions, ensuring that everyone has access to essential healthcare services. Senior citizens have also benefited, and the scheme’s commitment to inclusivity ensures that no one is left behind.

As the program continues to grow, it not only addresses the immediate healthcare needs of families but also builds the foundation for a healthier future. The legacy of PM-JAY is one of hope, ensuring that every citizen in India can access quality healthcare when they need it most.
