Mumbai, September 3, 2024: The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, today attended the centenary celebrations of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in Mumbai, emphasizing the Council’s significant role in upholding democratic values and addressing the aspirations of the people of Maharashtra.

In her address, President Murmu lauded the Maharashtra Legislative Council for its historic contributions since its inception, noting its role as a responsive Upper Chamber in the state’s legislative framework. She extended her congratulations to the members, both past and present, who have made notable contributions to public welfare and received recognition for their exemplary work.

“The Maharashtra Legislative Council has established a tradition of healthy debate and dialogue, which has been instrumental in strengthening democratic values in the state,” the President said. She highlighted the remarkable initiatives that have originated from the Council, including the Employment Guarantee Scheme conceived by former Chairman V.S. Page, which later served as a model for the national MGNREGA program.

President Murmu also spoke on the importance of the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils as the "House of Elders" in the Indian legislative system. She pointed out that these bodies often include more experienced members, who play a crucial role in enriching parliamentary practices and upholding a work culture grounded in wisdom and experience.

The President expressed her admiration for Maharashtra's strides in various fields, citing the state’s top rank in the country in terms of State GDP according to the Economic Survey 2023-24. She attributed this success to the collective efforts of the members of the Legislature, the State Government, and the people of Maharashtra.

Concluding her speech, President Murmu expressed confidence that Maharashtra’s development trajectory will continue to progress rapidly and wished the people of the state a prosperous future.
