PM Modi Receives Nigeria’s Second-Highest Civilian Honour, GCON

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Nigeria’s prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Sunday, becoming only the second foreign dignitary in history to receive the award, after Queen Elizabeth in 1969. This is the 17th international award Modi has received.

The award was presented to Modi by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of his contributions to strengthening ties between India and Nigeria. During the ceremony, Modi expressed his gratitude, saying, “I accept this honour with great humility and dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India and the enduring friendship between India and Nigeria.” He also thanked the Nigerian government and its people for the gesture.

In his address, Modi highlighted the strong India-Nigeria relationship, built on mutual cooperation, goodwill, and respect. He noted that both nations, as vibrant democracies with growing economies, are working together to improve the lives of their citizens.

Modi’s visit focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in sectors like economy, energy, agriculture, security, fintech, and cultural exchange. He also praised Nigeria’s role in Africa, stating that India values its collaboration with the continent, emphasizing India’s commitment to supporting the interests of the Global South.

This trip marks Modi’s first visit to Nigeria in 17 years, at the invitation of President Tinubu. Upon his arrival, Modi was warmly welcomed and presented with the "Key to the City" of Abuja, symbolizing the trust and respect Nigeria holds for India.

After concluding his visit to Nigeria, Modi will travel to Brazil to attend the G20 summit before heading to Guyana for his final stop.
