"Peruvian Sail Training Ship B.A.P. UNION Makes Memorable Visit to Mumbai"

Buque Armada Peruana (B.A.P.) Unión, a Peruvian Navy Sail Training Tall Ship, is on a goodwill visit to Mumbai from October 31 to November 5. On arriving in Mumbai, the ship fired 15 ceremonial gun salvos to salute the flag of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. The ship was given a ceremonial greeting, complete with an Indian Navy band.

HE Javier Manuel Paulinich Velarde, Peru's Ambassador to India, is also in Mumbai during this visit. Onboard BAP Unión, the Ambassador met with Vice Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.

On November 23, the Commanding Officer of the BAP Unión lay a wreath at Gaurav Stambh and met with Rear Adm Kunal Singh Rajkumar, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of the Headquarters Western Naval Command. During the encounter, the two fleets reviewed shared interests, training, and the possibilities of increasing maritime cooperation.

During the ship's stay in port, personnel from both fleets will interact professionally to discuss best practises. As a creative approach to give back to the community, the two navies will also join in a beach cleanship effort at Girgaon Chowpatty.

Traditionally, gun salutes are a symbol of respect delivered to the senior naval commander by a warship entering the naval harbour for the first time. The custom continues to this day, and most contemporary warships are outfitted with ceremonial cannons for this purpose.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of India and Peru's diplomatic ties, a partnership that has evolved over time. Despite being on opposite continents, the two countries have common marine interests and hope to expand bilateral cooperation.
