Owaisi Claims Waqf Amendment Bill Aims to Dismantle Waqf Board

Mumbai: AIMIM Chief and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi has criticized the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, calling it an attempt to dismantle the Waqf Board. He made these remarks during a press conference in Mumbai.

The Waqf Act of 1995 was established to manage waqf properties—charitable assets in Islam—but it has faced serious issues, including allegations of mismanagement and corruption. The new amendment bill seeks to introduce major reforms, including digitization, stricter audits, and legal processes to reclaim illegally occupied properties.

Owaisi contended that the bill does not aim to protect or improve Waqf properties. “The Narendra Modi government is not bringing this bill to protect, develop, or bring efficiency to the Waqf properties. This bill was presented to finish the Waqf Board,” he stated.

The bill has sparked a debate, with some advocating for the reforms while others worry it could weaken the Waqf Board.
