Mumbai to Get New Center of Excellence and Skill Development Under PPP Model: Piyush Goyal Announces


Mumbai, August 24, 2024 — Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, on the second day of his Mumbai tour, announced the establishment of a new Center of Excellence and Skill Development in Borivli. This initiative, set to be developed in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, will span an area of 1 lakh square feet and is expected to be operational within 6-8 months.

Addressing the media, Shri Goyal revealed that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has committed 50,000 square feet for a training center and 20,000 square feet for a hostel. The center aims to provide skill development training to 10,000 youth over the next three years, benefiting young men and women from across Maharashtra. This venture is anticipated to serve as a model for future PPP projects in the country.

The Minister's visit included discussions with key stakeholders such as Union Minister of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, and Minister of Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Government of Maharashtra, Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha. The team from CII and experts from NASSCOM and various skill councils also participated in the deliberations.

Shri Goyal began his day with a visit to Sanjay Gandhi National Park, engaging with the public and government officials. He also participated in a tree plantation drive alongside local students. Later, he inaugurated a mural dedicated to Adv. Balasaheb Apte at the Adv. Balasaheb Apte Law College in Dadar.

In his address to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India's 38th Regional Conference, Shri Goyal emphasized the need for mastering modern technologies and simplifying laws, urging ICAI members to champion the vision of "Viksit Bharat 2047."

The Minister concluded his tour by inaugurating PLASTINDIA 2026, scheduled for February 2026 in New Delhi. The event, set to showcase innovations in the plastics industry, is expected to be a major global platform for professionals seeking advanced solutions and business opportunities. Shri Goyal praised the PLASTINDIA FOUNDATION for its role in the industry's growth and assured support from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

This dynamic approach underscores the government's commitment to fostering skill development and industry growth, positioning Mumbai as a key player in these initiatives.
