Mumbai on High Alert: IMD Issues Red Warning as Severe Storms Expected Tonight


Mumbai, September 25, 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a RED alert for Mumbai and several other districts, warning of intense weather conditions expected later tonight. The alert follows a Nowcast warning issued at 1900 Hrs IST, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h.

  • Mumbai

  • Palghar

  • Nandurbar

  • Dhule

  • Jalgaon

  • Solapur

  • Satara

The weather conditions are expected to impact these areas over the next 3-4 hours, with the IMD urging residents to exercise extreme caution while stepping outdoors. The potential for waterlogging, disruption in traffic, and short-term power outages is high.

Municipal Authorities on High Alert:

In response to the red alert, the Municipal Commissioner has issued directives to ensure that emergency response teams are fully mobilized across the city. Key instructions include:

  1. Ward Control Rooms Staffed: Assistant Commissioners (ACs) have been instructed to ensure that an Executive Engineer stays overnight in each ward control room to monitor the situation and coordinate any urgent responses.

  2. Real-Time Coordination: All ACs are to remain in touch with the District Magistrate (DM) control room for the latest updates and to attend office if required for emergency interventions.

  3. Storm Water Drain (SWD) Preparedness: The Chief Engineer for SWD has been tasked with ensuring all dewatering pumps are operational and field staff are deployed in flood-prone areas to prevent waterlogging.

  4. Zonal Readiness: Deputy Chief Engineers (DCEs) are to be stationed in their respective zones overnight, ready to take immediate action as required.

  5. Close Monitoring by Senior Officials: Deputy Municipal Commissioners (DMCs) are to keep a vigilant eye on their zones, personally monitoring operations and ensuring that both ward and central agency teams are responding efficiently to emerging challenges.
