Mumbai: High-Level Inquiry Ordered After Woman Falls Into Drain, Dies in Andheri

Mumbai: Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragic death of a woman who fell into a rainwater drain in the Seepz area of Andheri (East) during heavy rainfall yesterday evening (September 25, 2024). The incident occurred as the city was hit by heavy downpours, which caused flooding across various parts of Mumbai.

A three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the matter, with a report expected within three days. The inquiry committee will be chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Circle 3, Devidas Kshirsagar, with Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer (Vigilance) Avinash Tambewagh serving as its other members.

The municipal commissioner has directed the committee to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a detailed report on the circumstances that led to the woman's tragic fall into the rain channel. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety measures in place during the ongoing monsoon season.

This incident marks yet another reminder of the challenges posed by Mumbai’s aging drainage infrastructure during periods of heavy rainfall. Authorities have assured the public that action will be taken based on the committee’s findings.
