MLA Ameet Satam Proposes District-Level Sports Facility on Reclaimed Juhu Plot

15 April 2025

Mumbai, In a major development that could boost sports infrastructure in the city, BJP MLA Ameet Satam has proposed the creation of a district-level open-to-sky sports facility on a recently reclaimed eight-acre plot in Juhu. Satam has written to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to initiate the project.

The plot, located opposite Ritambhara College in Juhu, was reclaimed by MHADA in February after nearly 20 years of legal battle. The land had been illegally annexed by a builder under the guise of a slum rehabilitation scheme using false hutment claims and forged documents. Following a sustained campaign by local residents and MLA Satam, MHADA successfully regained control of the land.

Highlighting the importance of the proposal, Satam stated in his letter to MHADA, “After all legal hurdles are cleared, I request that an NOC be granted to develop a district-level open-to-sky sports facility on the land for the benefit of citizens, in accordance with the Development Plan (DP) reservations.”

According to the DP remarks shared by Satam, the 31,000 square meter plot is designated as open space and road. “I have attached the DP reservations for reference. This land presents a golden opportunity to develop much-needed sports infrastructure in the area,” he added.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging sports among youth and citizens by providing them a well-equipped, accessible platform. “A district-level open-to-sky sports facility would greatly benefit citizens and youngsters by nurturing their sporting interests and offering them a space to pursue their passions,” Satam said.

The move has been welcomed by local residents, many of whom were instrumental in exposing the illegal occupation using satellite imagery and official records. If approved, the project could set a precedent for reclaiming and repurposing public land for community welfare.
