Union Commerce and Industry and Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution and Textiles Minister Shri Piyush Goyal attended a Copyright Stakeholders' Meeting in Mumbai with representatives from Copyright Societies and the Indian Music Industry. Goyal emphasised the government's commitment to protecting culture, heritage, and diversity in the cinema, film, and music industries. He emphasised the need for the entire industry to come together to enhance the creative industry and strengthen its soft power. The music industry's royalty collection has increased by 10 times in recent years but still has immense potential. The meeting also touched upon pressing issues such as royalty distribution, statutory licencing, single-window licencing, and inclusive representation on the copyright society's board. Goyal emphasised the need for fair and equitable distribution of royalty and the extension of statutory licencing on the internet. He also emphasised the need for equitable representation in copyright societies, including women, and equal rights for smaller artists. The government has formed a committee to address these issues, chaired by Shri Anoop Jalota, and will submit a report with solutions within 30 days.
