Massive 'Walk for Freedom' in Mumbai Galvanizes Thousands to Combat Human Trafficking

Global Movement Against Modern Slavery Gathers Momentum Across India

In a remarkable display of unity and determination, citizens across India joined hands in the Walk for Freedom event, organized to raise awareness about the pressing issue of human trafficking. The event, part of the world's largest anti-human trafficking initiative, saw participation from 100 locations across the country. Here in Mumbai, Maharashtra, it marked the fifth edition of the event, growing exponentially since its inception in 2017.

The global Walk for Freedom initiative, organized by A21, an international charity dedicated to combating modern slavery, is a monumental effort involving over 500 locations in 50 countries. To date, the movement has reached an astonishing 250 million people in 72 countries, making it a formidable force against the scourge of human trafficking.

In India, the Walk for Freedom was introduced in 2017 by 'The Movement India,' a 'social impact team' engaged in various crucial areas, including education for vulnerable children, mental health support for urban youth, and anti-human trafficking efforts.

What began as a single walk with a small group of 350 citizens in Mumbai has grown substantially, with the event expanding to five locations in Mumbai and Chennai in 2018, 10 cities across India in 2019, and a remarkable 20 cities in 2022, bringing together over 13,000 citizens from all walks of life, united in their resolve to end human trafficking within their lifetime.

Human trafficking remains a grave concern worldwide, with an estimated 49.6 million people enduring various forms of modern slavery, including sexual exploitation, forced labor, organ trafficking, forced marriage, and domestic servitude. According to a recent report from the International Labor Organization (2022), this means that 1 in every 150 people globally is a victim of this heinous crime.

India is not exempt from this crisis. As per the National Crime Records Bureau's "Crime in India" report for 2021, an alarming statistic emerged: 8 children were trafficked every day. This underscores the urgent need for awareness and action to combat human trafficking within the nation's borders.

Recently, in June 2023, a shocking incident came to light in the Osmanabad district of Maharashtra, where 11 daily wage workers were subjected to appalling conditions. They were held against their will, subjected to violence, forced into grueling labor, and even restrained with chains. These individuals were denied basic human rights, including adequate food and medical care. Police intervention was required to rescue them, highlighting the stark reality of human trafficking even in the modern age.

The Walk for Freedom is a powerful call to action for every single victim of human trafficking. It emphasizes that by joining together in strength and solidarity, educating ourselves about the grim reality of human trafficking, and remaining vigilant to the signs of exploitation in our communities, we can envision an India free from this scourge.

Every step taken, every poster held high, and every flyer distributed in homes, colleges, and offices brings society one step closer to a safe community where every individual is guaranteed the right to live with dignity. In the battle against human trafficking, the citizens of India stand united, unwavering in their commitment to creating a brighter and safer future for all.

The 'Walk for Freedom' serves as a poignant symbol of solidarity with the voiceless victims of human trafficking. It encourages citizens to educate themselves about this issue, identify the telltale signs of trafficking, and take action by promptly dialing the National Helpline numbers: 1098 (Child line) for children and 181 (the National Police Helpline for Women) for women in distress.

Participants were strongly encouraged to save these critical numbers on their mobile devices. The march, led by esteemed guests of honor, commenced in Shivaji Nagar as they symbolically inaugurated the walk. Organizers emphasized that this event is a peaceful demonstration of unity against human trafficking, and participants were urged to share their experiences on social media using the hashtags #imthemovement #againsthumantrafficking #WFFIndia2023.

As the walk drew to a close, attendees assembled for a group photograph, visited the photobooth, savored refreshments, and received certificates. Organizers reminded participants of the responsibility to dispose of wrappers and bottles thoughtfully, underscoring their commitment to a clean and sustainable environment.

The 'Walk for Freedom' transcends symbolism; it is a critical step towards constructing a society where every individual can live with dignity, liberated from the clutches of human trafficking. As the event continues to gain momentum, the collective aspiration is that India will evolve into a nation free from human trafficking in the lifetime of its citizens, where every individual is both aware of this crime and empowered to prevent it.

The chief guest at the event was Police Officer Rekha Dage Nirbhaya Pathak ki Sinir, along with other distinguished individuals, including community leader Bhadur Shaikh, Sajjad Mapari, Principal of Ruby Jr College, and Senior PI Santosh Sir.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guests highlighted the importance of raising awareness about anti-human trafficking efforts in India, emphasizing that awareness is an individual and collective responsibility.

The event also received valuable support from partner NGOs and colleges, including Ruby College, Apnaliya NGO, ALEP Cities NGO, MSA NGO, DBM India NGO, Bombay Welfare Trust, Niay Kandra, the Police Department, Mim TIMES and News Yashodra.
