New Delhi, November 6, 2024: Indian Railways achieved a historic milestone on November 4, 2024, transporting over 3 crore passengers in a single day. This is the highest number of passengers carried in one day this year.
On that day, Indian Railways served 120.72 lakh non-suburban passengers, including 19.43 lakh reserved and 101.29 lakh unreserved passengers. The suburban services saw 180 lakh passengers, setting a new single-day record.
From October 1 to November 5, 2024, Indian Railways ran 4,521 special trains, helping 65 lakh passengers travel during the festive season. This year, the total number of special trains operated has increased to 7,724, a 73% rise compared to last year, to meet the extra demand during festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja.
To manage the return rush after Chhath Puja, Indian Railways will run extra special trains from November 8 to November 11, 2024. On November 8, 164 special trains will be scheduled, followed by 160 trains on November 9, 161 on November 10, and 155 on November 11. This will help accommodate the huge number of passengers traveling back after the festival.
Indian Railways also reports that between October 1 and November 5, around 6.85 crore passengers traveled to Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. This is more than twice the combined population of countries like Australia and New Zealand, showing the scale of operations.
With these efforts, Indian Railways is ensuring that millions of passengers can travel smoothly during the busy festive period.
