Indian Coast Guard Conducts NATPOLREX-IX at Vadinar, Gujarat

National Exercise Showcases India's Preparedness Against Marine Pollution

Vadinar, Gujarat: In a significant demonstration of readiness and coordination, the Indian Coast Guard led the 9th National Level Pollution Response Exercise (NATPOLREX-IX) at Vadinar, Gujarat, on November 25, 2023. The exercise, overseen by Director General Rakesh Pal, emphasized the collaboration among various ministries, central and coastal state governments, ports, and international observers.

With participation from over 31 foreign observers and 80 delegates, NATPOLREX-IX invoked the National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP). This exercise aimed to assess preparedness and coordination among multiple agencies in responding to oil spills at sea.

Highlighting India's capabilities, the Coast Guard deployed surface and aerial platforms, including Pollution Response Vessels (PRVs), Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-IIIs, and specialized Dornier aircraft for marine pollution response. This showcased the nation's commitment to 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.'

The Coast Guard, responsible for protecting India's maritime environment since March 7, 1986, established the NOSDCP in 1993. Additionally, four Pollution Response Centers in Mumbai, Chennai, Port Blair, and Vadinar further bolster India's response to oil spill disasters.

Given that 75% of India's energy needs are met through oil imports by sea, a robust response system is crucial. The transportation of oil carries inherent risks, necessitating preventive measures by ship owners and oil-receiving facilities in ports.

The Indian Coast Guard plays a pivotal role as the central coordinating authority for responding to oil spills in the Indian Ocean, recognizing the omnipresent threat of marine accidents and unexpected hazards at sea.
