Election Commission Forms Task Force to Monitor Weather Conditions for Phase 2 Lok Sabha Poll Amid Heat Wave Concerns

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of voters, polling personnel, and security forces amidst reports of rising temperatures in certain parts of the country. In a significant development, the Commission has constituted a task force comprising officials from key agencies to closely monitor heat wave conditions ahead of Phase 2 of the General Elections.

In a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and attended by senior officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), it was revealed that the IMD has forecasted normal weather for the 13 States/Union Territories slated for polling in Phase 2 on April 26.

DG IMD assured the Commission that there are no major concerns regarding heat waves for Phase 2. However, in light of potential heat wave conditions in certain regions, the Commission has directed the task force to monitor the situation closely five days prior to each polling phase and recommend mitigatory measures if necessary.

Furthermore, the Commission has instructed MoHFW to issue necessary directives to health authorities in states to prepare for and extend assistance in case of heatwave conditions affecting election operations. Additionally, the Commission will conduct a separate review with State Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to ensure adequate arrangements at polling stations, including provisions for shade, drinking water, fans, and other essential facilities.

In a bid to raise public awareness, the Commission will conduct Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to educate voters about precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of heat waves in polling station areas.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders involved in the electoral process and reiterated its standing instructions for Assured Minimum Facilities at polling stations. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and NDMA have also issued guidelines to mitigate the risk of heat wave-related issues, emphasizing the importance of preparedness at the state level.

With these proactive measures in place, the Election Commission aims to ensure a smooth and safe electoral process, prioritizing the comfort and well-being of all participants.
