MUMBAI: The 14th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly officially ended today as Chief Minister Eknath Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan. This follows the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s big win in the Assembly elections.
Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis met the Governor at Raj Bhavan to formally step down. With the BJP being the largest party in the alliance, Fadnavis is expected to become the next Chief Minister.
BJP Pushes for Fadnavis as CM
BJP MLAs are backing Fadnavis for the top job, and sources say the central leadership in Delhi has approved his name. However, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) claims they have not agreed on any candidate yet, with a senior leader saying, “We were not consulted on this matter.”
Discussions on Cabinet Sharing
Talks on dividing Cabinet posts are ongoing. Reports suggest:
BJP may take 21 ministerial positions.
The Shinde Sena could get 12 positions.
The NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) might get 10 positions.
Important portfolios like Home, Finance, Urban Development, and Revenue, which were earlier with the BJP, could now be shared with alliance partners. Maharashtra can have a maximum of 43 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
