New Delhi, October 4, 2024 – Customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport have seized 12 iPhone 16 Pro Max smartphones from passengers attempting to smuggle them into India from Dubai.
The passengers, who had arrived on a flight from Dubai, were found with the high-end phones during routine baggage checks. The total value of the seized iPhones is estimated to be over ₹25 lakh (2.5 million rupees). These phones were not declared by the passengers, which is a violation of customs rules.
Smuggling of goods like expensive smartphones is common, as people try to avoid paying high customs duties. The customs officials are investigating the passengers and looking into whether this is part of a larger smuggling network.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple’s latest release, is in high demand globally, and people often try to bring them into India to sell at a higher price due to the lower cost in places like Dubai.
Customs authorities have reminded travelers that not declaring expensive goods when entering the country can lead to fines, seizure of goods, and other legal consequences.
The passengers caught with the phones are being questioned, and further action will be taken based on the investigation.
