Congress Issues Whip as ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill to Be Introduced in Lok Sabha Today

New Delhi: The ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) Bill, officially called the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, will be presented in the Lok Sabha today. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the Bill, which aims to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and Union Territories.

The Congress party has asked all its Lok Sabha MPs to be present in the House for this important discussion. A meeting of Congress MPs will also be held at 10:30 am in the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) office to plan for the day’s proceedings.

The ONOE Bill was approved by the Union Cabinet last week and could be sent to a joint parliamentary committee for review. Another Bill, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will also be tabled. This Bill aims to align the election schedules of Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and Delhi with the proposed simultaneous elections.

The government believes the ONOE Bill will reduce election costs and improve efficiency. However, opposition parties, including Congress, have raised questions about its impact and practicality.

The Lok Sabha is expected to see a heated debate as the Bill is introduced. This marks a significant step towards major changes in India’s election process.
