Mumbai: A 52-year-old businessman, Philip Hitesh Shah, died by suicide on Wednesday morning after jumping off Mumbai's Atal Setu. This is the second case of suicide from the bridge in two days.
Shah, who lived in Matunga, had been struggling with depression for several months. Around 9 a.m., he stopped his car on the bridge, near the 14.4 km mark from Navi Mumbai, and jumped into the sea. A rescue team quickly found his body, but doctors at the hospital declared him dead.
Police identified him using his Aadhaar card found in his car. His wife told police that Shah had left home saying he was going to a function, but he had been mentally disturbed and receiving treatment for depression.
Just two days earlier, a 40-year-old banker, Sushant Chakravarti, had also jumped off the same bridge. Chakravarti had been under heavy work pressure. The Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, is a newly opened sea bridge connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai.
