New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday alleged that former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has ties with an organisation funded by the George Soros Foundation, which it claims has supported the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation.
The BJP said Sonia Gandhi, as co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, is connected to this organisation. "This shows how foreign entities are influencing India’s internal affairs," the party stated.
The BJP also accused the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, of working with the Soros Foundation, highlighting "foreign funding’s role in Indian organisations."
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also targeted for using reports from the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) to attack the Adani Group. The BJP claimed that OCCRP, funded by the Soros Foundation, is part of a plan to harm India’s economy and defame the Modi government.
US Denies Allegations
The US embassy rejected the BJP’s claims that it is involved in destabilizing India. A spokesperson said the US supports media freedom and training for journalists but does not interfere in editorial decisions.
Despite this, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said he would ask Rahul Gandhi 10 questions in Parliament about his links with OCCRP. "The opposition is trying to silence me, but I will use my right to ask these questions," Dubey said.
The OCCRP Debate
OCCRP, a media platform based in Amsterdam, investigates global crime and corruption. The BJP claims its links to Soros-funded organisations show an attempt to damage India’s reputation globally.
The Congress has not yet responded to these allegations, while the political battle continues to heat up as the 2024 elections approach.
