On Sunday (November 5, 2023), BIS authorities from Mumbai Branch Office-I conducted an Enforcement operation at a jewellery business in Andheri East. The BIS team searched M/S.Variety Jewellers, Shop No. 02, Cyril Gonsalves Chawl, Cardinal Gracious Road, near Shivsena Office Chakala, Andheri(E), Mumbai-400099, in response to information received about a breach of the Hallmarking of Gold and Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020. During the operation, it was discovered that the Jewellery Shop was selling gold jewellery without a BIS hallmark and old hallmarking from before July 1, 2021. A significant amount of gold jewellery without BIS hallmarks and old hallmarking (existing prior to 1st July 2021) discovered during the operation were seized in accordance with Sections 15(3) and 17(1) of the BIS Act 2016. According to the BIS Act 2016, violating Sections 15(3) and 17(1) is punished by imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of at least Rs. 2,00,000, or both. According to Shri Satish Kumar, Senior Director and Head of Mumbai Branch Office-1, action is being taken to file a complaint in court for the offence.
According to the BIS Act of 2016, no one shall show for sale any such products covered by the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 without a valid licence. As a result, all consumers are encouraged to use the BIS CARE App (available in both Mobile Android and iOS) to find out the list of mandatory products that must be BIS certified, and to confirm the authenticity of the Hallmark on the product before making a purchase by visiting the BIS website https://www.bis.gov.in/. Citizens are asked to report any instances where mandatory products are being sold without BIS certification, or where Hallmark is being misused on any product, to the Head, MUBO-I, Western Regional Office, BIS, 5th Floor, CETTM Complex, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai - 400076. The source of such information shall remain anonymous.
